Why Comuna 13 matters

Comuna 13 (San Javier), on the western hills of Medellín, went from one of the most violent neighborhoods in the world in the early 2000s to the city's best-known symbol of transformation. The outdoor escalators, the graffiti murals along the Independencias sector, the hip-hop and breakdance groups and the viewpoints over the valley now draw hundreds of thousands of visitors a year.

Getting there

From El Poblado it is a 25 to 35 minute drive, or the metro to San Javier station plus a short walk or taxi up. From the airport, plan on 75 to 90 minutes; most travelers visit on their second or third day.

Group tours run on a fixed route at a fixed time with 15 to 30 people. With a private host and driver you leave from your hotel when you want, spend more time with the local artists and vendors, avoid the midday crowds and combine the visit with lunch in Laureles or the city center.

What to expect

Two to three hours on foot, some stairs and slopes, street food, live performances, murals that change every few months and a strong story told by people who lived it. Bring cash in pesos for tips and small purchases.

The touristic sector around the escalators is safe during the day and full of visitors. Go with a local, stay on the main route, avoid visiting after dark and keep your phone secure while taking photos.
